This is a new edition of the Dictionary of Great Britain which was first published in 1978. Much of the Dictionary has been revised to reflect the changes that have taken place in British life and institutions. Many of the words included in the Dictionary are proper names -- names of companies, organizations, societies, media companies, newspapers, magazines, TV programmes, and culture centres. Entries are provided with extensive statistics and comments, including circulations of newspapers, numbers of students in colleges and universities, etc. Many entries include etymology, stylistic labels, and other linguistic information. Stress is indicated in phrases. The aim of this dictionary is to help people outside Great Britain to gain a deeper understanding of English texts, to see the “full picture” and grasp nuances and cultural allusions. The dictionary has been compiled by Adrian Room in collaboration with Russian experts.
